Best Book Read in June: CODE NAME VERITY

This week’s YA Highway Road Trip Wednesday asks: What’s the best book you read in June? My answer? Elizabeth Wein’s Code Name Verity. From Goodreads: I have two weeks. You’ll shoot me at the end no matter what I do. That’s what you do to enemy agents. It’s what we do to enemy agents. But I look at all the dark and twisted roads ahead and cooperation is the easy way out. Possibly the only way out for a girl caught red-handed doing dirty work like mine — and I will do anything, anything, to avoid SS-Hauptsturmführer von Linden interrogating me again. He has said that I can have as much paper as I need. All I have to...

Real-Life Inspiration for Writing Settings

Take inspiration from what’s around you. Meet Suzie, my friend’s dog. I walked Suzie once a week for almost the whole time I worked on Glimpse. It was while driving to Suzie’s house that I came up with the idea for the book, and it was during her walks that I honed those ideas and did lots of vital daydreaming (in-between throwing balls and scooping poop, of course). Almost without thinking about it, the village where Suzie lived and the landscapes I walked her through—a tree-filled nature reserve and countless empty fields—became settings in my story. When that happened, I started paying even greater attention to the world around me as I...

Best Book Read in May: THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE

This week’s YA Highway Road Trip Wednesday asks: What’s the best book you read in May? It’s been a while since I read a book I loved, so I’m very happy to say I have an answer! From Goodreads: Seventeen-year-old Lennie Walker, bookworm and band geek, plays second clarinet and spends her time tucked safely and happily in the shadow of her fiery older sister, Bailey. But when Bailey dies abruptly, Lennie is catapulted to center stage of her own life – and, despite her nonexistent history with boys, suddenly finds herself struggling to balance two. Toby was Bailey’s boyfriend; his grief mirrors Lennie’s...

Book Memory

I read a thought-provoking article last week called The Curse of Reading and Forgetting. As its name suggests, it was about how, unless we re-read books, we gradually forget their content. I realised how completely true that is. I could list the names of hundreds of books I’ve read, but, unless it was in the last year or so, I’d struggle to tell you the plot in much detail. For example, just the other week I re-visited The Great Gatsby—a book I read at least twice for uni—but as far as remembering the plot goes, I may as well have been reading it for the first time. Except it wasn’t quite like reading it for the first time. I remembered the...
