It’s a whole year today since Glimpse was published! It seems only a few months ago that I was writing posts for the blog tour and preparing for my launch party. The year’s zoomed by. I’ve had such a blast at school visits and events, and have loved the opportunity to meet lots of new people and fellow book lovers. Thank you so much for everyone’s support this last year, whether you’ve read the book, added it on Goodreads, been friendly on Twitter, followed this blog, or invited me into your school. It’s a wonderful and nerve-wracking time when a book makes its way into the world, and you’ve all made it lovely for...
This week the Author Allsorts are talking day jobs. Today, I’m sharing all about mine as a chocolatier — how I fit chocolate making in with writing, and how the two jobs are more similar than you might think! You can read my post here. A second little bit of news — this month, lovely author Susie Day launched the online UKYA Shop, where you can buy all sorts of book related swag, from tote bags to mugs to throw pillows. Proceeds go towards supporting UKYA around the country. Find the shop here, and, should you wish to drink your tea from a very funky Glimpse quote mug (I know I do), you can get yourself one here. Today’s my stop on the UKYA Extravaganza blog tour, and I’ve headed to Splustbookworms’ YouTube channel for an interview. We chatted all sorts, including Glimpse, writing YA fiction, and some of my favourite books. Thomas and Sophie of Splustbookworms have been brilliant — they’re loads of fun, as you can probably guess from the video! I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on their channel. Here it is… (Go easy on me – it’s my first ever video, eek!) Share...
I’m a little in awe of authors who write historical novels. Crafting a good story and researching all the details is some feat. I had a taster of that research with Glimpse, which is inspired by Noyes’ poem ‘The Highwayman’ (published in 1906 but set much earlier; probably the 1700s, which was the heyday of highwaymen). While I didn’t need a lot of historical information for my plot (which is mostly set in the present day), a chapter or two relied quite heavily on it, and I wanted to be able to throw in an occasional detail here and there. Here’s what my research looked like. Voice and Language I stumbled across the Huzzar...
